Think back, you’re in sixth form or college, you’re being asked to make one of the most important decisions of your life. Most of your teachers will be encouraging you to go to university, touting it as the beginning of the rest of your life. Do you take the leap?

If you’re reading this, I assume you have taken the leap. University can be many things for many people, it could be the greatest 3/4 years of your life, you could love your course and find an even greater love for your passion. However, there is a chance it could be the opposite, you could hate your course and lose your passion. Most of the time, your university experience will be a mixed bag. You’ll have good times and bad.

One of the biggest pluses of university isn’t the course, it’s the friends you make, the relationships you have, they will help you grow as a person. You will learn many things during your time as university, and one of the most important things you’ll learn, will be who you are. You will learn what’s good and what’s bad, it will be your choice whether you will take on board what you learn and change or not.

Your friends may come from your course, a sports club or society that you joined or from the many, many nights out you’ll have. Your friends will be the best part of your university life, they will help you through thick and thin. Some of the friends you make at university will be with you for the rest of your life.

Your course, this one is a mixed bag, it all depends on the course and the university, some courses may be taught badly and others amazingly. You always hear the same old line, the more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it. In all honesty, that is correct, you’ll have the most fun when you turn up and put the effort in. It may not be the most interesting part of university, but it is one of the most important factors to make university great for yourself.

Your friends, your society, will help you through university more than anything else, having people who care about you makes it so much easier to get through. It doesn’t matter how much you might hate parts of university, times when it gets too much, when the course gets too hard, those friends will make it all worthwhile. So, is university worth it? With the right people, it most certainly is.
